Richard Wagner Holds First News Conference as Canada's Chief Justice
Chief Justice of Canada Richard Wagner holds a rare news conference in Ottawa to provide an update on the work of the Supreme Court. He speaks about the court's initiatives to make its work more accessible to Canadians, such as posting new plain language case summaries on its social media accounts. The chief justice also takes questions from reporters on topics including the court's role in deciding federal-provincial disputes, the 50-year embargo on public access to documents related to deliberations, the high incarceration rate for Indigenous people, and reforming the Canadian Judicial Council. Wagner was appointed chief justice on December 18, 2017, after serving on the top court for five years. He succeeded Beverley McLachlin, who retired after 17 years in the role. (June 22, 2018)
