MMIWG Inquiry Releases Its Final Report
The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls holds a closing ceremony at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, to present its final report to the federal, provincial and territorial governments. The 1,200-page report includes 231 calls for justice and the conclusion that the violence that the Inquiry heard about "amounts to a race-based genocide of Indigenous Peoples, including First Nations, Inuit and Métis, which especially targets women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people." The inquiry heard from 1,484 family members and survivors of violence during its 15 community hearings across Canada in 2017 and 2018. Over 80 experts, officials and Indigenous knowledge keepers also provided testimony in 9 separate hearings. The inquiry was originally scheduled to submit its final report in November 2018, but the government granted commissioners a six-month extension instead of the requested two years. An interim report was released in June 2018. (June 3, 2019) This broadcast deals with sensitive subject matter.
