Govt Urged to Keep Promise on Grassy Narrows Mercury Care Home
Speaking with reporters in Ottawa, Grassy Narrows Chief Rudy Turtle calls on the federal government to honour its promise to build a mercury care home for his community. He is joined by Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Perry Bellegarde, Ontario Regional Chief Roseanne Archibald, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Grassy Narrows Elder Bill Fobister Sr., and Grassy Narrows youth Ronald J. (RJ) Bruce. The news conference is being held on the first day of the AFN's Special Chiefs Assembly. The home was promised to the Grassy Narrows First Nation in 2017 by Jane Philpott, who was minister of indigenous services at the time. The northern Ontario community continues to suffer from the effects caused by industrial dumping of mercury in its waterways during the 1960s. (December 3, 2019) (no interpretation)
