Opposition Reaction to Prime Minister’s Update on Blockades
Bloc Québécois deputy House leader Christine Normandin, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer and NDP whip Rachel Blaney speak with reporters in Ottawa following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s news conference concerning the federal government’s response to ongoing blockades of transportation facilities. While the prime minister insists that the federal government still welcomes discussion with Indigenous leaders, he says the barricades must now come down and that injunctions must be obeyed. The protests, mounted in solidarity with hereditary chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en Nation who oppose the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline project, have brought a halt to passenger and freight rail traffic in a number of locations across Canada.
