Ministers Discuss Revised Medical Assistance in Dying Bill – October 5, 2020
At a news conference on Parliament Hill, federal ministers David Lametti (justice), Patty Hajdu (health) and Carla Qualtrough (employment and disability inclusion) discuss the reintroduction of the federal government's revised medical assistance in dying legislation. In February 2020, the government introduced its revised legislation (C-7) in response to a September 2019 Quebec court ruling that struck down several provisions of the original 2016 bill. The Quebec court ruled that restricting access to only those whose natural deaths are "reasonably foreseeable" was unconstitutional. Bill C-7 did not get past second reading due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent prorogation of Parliament. The federal government was granted two deadline extensions by the Quebec court, and it now has until December 18, 2020, to amend and pass its bill to comply with the court ruling.
