Agriculture Minister on Supply Management, Compensations for Farmers
On Parliament Hill, Marie-Claude Bibeau, the minister of agriculture and agri-food, answers reporters’ questions on supply management and the payment of compensation promised to farmers who have been impacted financially after the signing of new trade deals. The minister reiterates her government’s commitment to send a second payment before March 2021, out of the $1.75 billion over 8 years that was promised for dairy farmers. She also says that the fact there was no federal budget tabled yet in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic is part of the reason why eggs and chicken farmers still have not received any compensation.
