Federal Govt. Unveils Bill To Update Environmental Protection Law
At a virtual press conference, Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s minister of environment and climate change, outlines the federal government's new bill (C-28) aimed at strengthening the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). He is joined by William Amos, who was an environmental lawyer before being elected the MP for Pontiac, Quebec. CEPA came into force in 1988 and is one of the main federal laws to prevent and control pollution. The Liberals are following through on a campaign promise they made in 2019 and the proposed amendments are the first major reforms to CEPA in over 20 years. Measures include enshrining the right to a healthy environment for all Canadians, establishing tougher rules for managing chemicals, and providing more information to consumers about products containing toxic substances through mandatory labelling.
