N.B. Implementing 21 Recommendations to Improve Mental Health Crisis Care
New Brunswick Health Minister Dorothy Shephard holds a news conference in Fredericton to announce that the provincial government will implement 21 recommendations to improve its mental health crisis and addictions response. The recommendations were made by the Department of Health, as well as by the Horizon and Vitalité regional health authorities. Recommendations include providing trauma-informed care training to emergency department staff, police, and other first responders, and providing funding to support staffing needs in both regional health authorities to address identified critical areas of need. Minister Shephard announced a review of mental health crisis care in the province, following the suicide of a teenager who did not receive any mental health help after waiting in an emergency room for over eight hours. Lexi Daken took her own life on February 24. The provincial government also recently released its five-year plan to address the increasing demand for addiction and mental-health services in New Brunswick. (May 12, 2021) (no interpretation)
