House of Commons Proceedings
April 20, 2020 (Part 1 of 2)
As the House reconvenes following a five-week adjournment due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic, a reduced number of MPs are present in the chamber in compliance with physical-distancing guidelines. MPs consider a motion by government House leader Pablo Rodriguez that would prolong the adjournment of the House until May 25, 2020, while establishing a special committee consisting of all MPs to meet in person each Wednesday and by videoconference on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During the course of debate on the motion, Andrew Scheer, the leader of the Official Opposition, proposes an amendment that would see the special committee meet in person on two days each week rather than one. During Question Period, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of his cabinet face inquiries concerning the government’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
