PM Trudeau Delivers Apology for Internment of Italian-Canadians – May 27, 2021
In the House of Commons, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivers a formal apology on behalf of the federal government for the internment of Italian-Canadians during the Second World War. The apology is followed by remarks by Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole, Bloc Québécois deputy caucus chair Marie-Hélène Gaudreau, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, and Green Parliamentary leader Elizabeth May. Canada interned an estimated 600 men of Italian heritage after Italy declared war against Canada in 1940 and the Canadian government enacted the War Measures Act. Approximately 31,000 Italian- Canadians were declared "enemy aliens" by the government.
