In Committee from the Senate of Canada
Jim Carr Urges Senate to Pass CPTPP Bill Quickly
Foreign Affairs - October 18, 2018: International Trade Diversification Minister Jim Carr appears at the committee to discuss his mandate letter and the government's bill (C-79) to implement the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Bill C-79 was passed by the House of Commons two days earlier. Bruce Christie from Global Affairs Canada testifies alongside the minister. Canada is aiming to become one of the first six countries to ratify the agreement. The CPTPP comes into force 60 days after six of the 11 signatories have ratified the agreement. To date Mexico, Japan and Singapore have ratified the deal. Other current signatories are Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, and Vietnam. Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the original TPP agreement in 2017, leading the remaining countries to move forward on a revised version.
