MAID Law: Minister Lametti Faces More Questions on Bill C-7
Legal and Constitutional Affairs - February 1, 2021 - Part 1: Justice Minister David Lametti returns to the committee to face more questions over Bill C-7, the government’s legislation to amend the Criminal Code concerning medical assistance in dying (MAID). In September 2019, a Quebec court ruled that the law restricting MAID access to those only with a “reasonably foreseeable” death was unconstitutional. The court ruling would mean Quebec would have different MAID rules from the rest of Canada unless the federal government amended the law. The federal government announced changes to Canada’s MAID laws in last February, by expanding access to those who aren’t facing a “reasonably foreseeable” death. Also speaking to the committee are the Department of Justice’s Joanne Klineberg, Caroline Quesnel, and Carole Morency.
