Public Safety and National Security - June 19, 2017
Conservative Senator Claude Carignan presents his bill to protect the confidentiality of journalistic sources. Bill S-231 amends the Canada Evidence Act and the Criminal Code. Independent Senator André Pratte and Conservative MP Gérard Deltell, who are both former journalists, testify alongside Senator Carignan. Deltell is the sponsor of S-231 in the House. Canadian Media Coalition representatives Jennifer McGuire (general manager and editor in chief, CBC News) and Michel Cormier (general manager of news and current affairs for the CBC's French services), as well as Canadian Journalists for Free Expression executive director Tom Henheffer express their support of the bill during the second panel. MPs proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of the bill after hearing from the witnesses. (June 19, 2017)
