Special COVID-19 Committee Holds its Last Meeting
Special Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic - June 18, 2020: Today’s gathering marks the last meeting of the House’s Special Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic as the House rises for the summer break. MPs will meet four times in the summer during special sitting days. After yesterday’s failure to win a United Nations Security Council seat, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defends his government’s efforts to secure a seat and his track record on foreign policy. The prime minister also answers questions about the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) extension, systemic racism in the RCMP, and more. Bloc Québécois whip Claude DeBellefeuille rises on a point of order for the committee chair to not recognize NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in the House. Yesterday, the NDP leader was ejected from the House Chamber after calling Bloc House Leader Alain Therrien a racist and refusing to apologize for doing so. The special committee comprised all 338 MPs and met in a hybrid meeting format, which combined MPs in the chamber with others joining by video link.
