Unrest in Hong Kong: Concerns Over Hostage Diplomacy

Special Committee on Canada-China Relations – October 26, 2020:

MPs discuss the issue of ‘hostage diplomacy’ in the context of the Hong Kong democracy protests.

The committee hears from activists Angela Gui and Nathan Law. Gui’s father Gui Minhai, a Swedish citizen, was abducted in 2015. Gui Minhai co-owned a bookstore in Hong Kong that sold books critical of the Chinese government. Law, was a leader of the Umbrella Movement and a founder of the pro-democracy political party Demosistō.
