In Committee from the House of Commons
Ethics and Lobbying Commissioners Face Questions
Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics - Novembe 27, 2020: MPs hear from Mario Dion, conflict of interest and ethics commissioner, as well as Nancy Bélanger, lobbying commissioner, for the committee’s study on various conflict of interest and lobbying issues related to the government’s pandemic spending. The two commissioners face questions over their respective office’s investigations into the WE Charity scandal, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their work, and more. Some of the conflict of interest and lobbying issues of interest to the committee include the multimillion-dollar contract awarded to former Liberal MP Frank Baylis for the procurement of ventilators; the agreement to administer the government’s commercial rent relief program with a company with ties to Katie Telford, the prime minister’s chief of staff; and Canada’s former ambassador to the U.S. David MacNaughton’s lobbying efforts on behalf of Palantir Technologies Canada.
