Supreme Court Hearings
Halifax Regional Municipality v. Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, et al.
Halifax Regional Municipality, a body corporate duly incorporated pursuant to the laws of Nova Scotia v. Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, et al. (October 19, 2011) Case #33651 The Supreme Court of Canada heard arguments regarding supplementary municipal funding for different school boards. Lucien Comeau filed complaints in 2003 and 2004 with the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission about the lack of supplementary funding for French-language schools. Comeau is of Acadian descent and his children attended French-language schools. The Halifax Regional Municipality argues that there is no need for a human rights inquiry because the funding policy has changed. Legislation was amended in 2006 so that French and English schools in the Halifax Regional Municipality both receive the same funding benefits.
