Riding to Watch: Elmwood–Transcona MB

This was Canada’s closest race in 2015. Only 61 votes separated the NDP’s Daniel Blaikie from the incumbent Conservative Lawrence Toet.

Blaikie and Toet are both back on the ballot in 2019. The Liberals, who were only 2,000 votes behind, are running former Crown attorney Jennifer Malabar. Kelly Manweiler is the Green candidate.

 
IN 2015:

Daniel Blaikie (NDP) won with 34.1% support — and a 0.1% margin of victory (61 votes) over Conservative runner-up Lawrence Toet.

Elmwood–Transcona was the closest race out of all 338 ridings.

Voter turnout was 65.6%.


 
THE RIDING IN NUMBERS (CENSUS 2016):

SIZE: 49.6 km2

POPULATION: 92,738 people in 2016: a change of 8% from 2011. The average age is 38.7, with 18.4% age 14 and under and 13.8% 65 and older.

CITIZENSHIP: 91.5% are Canadian citizens. 21% are immigrants. 13.6% indicated Aboriginal identity. 21.5% are visible minorities. 21.7% are 1st generation Canadians. 18.1% are 2nd generation. 60.3% are 3rd generation and older.

HOUSING: The average home value in 2016 was $269,170. Renters paid an average of $951 per month, with 15.8% in subsidized housing. 71.0% of dwellings are single-detached houses; 2.8% are condos. 6.7% of all homes were built between 2011 and 2016.

INCOME: Median total income in 2015 was $35,882. 13.1% of people were classified as low-income (after tax) — 20.2% of children and 12.4% of seniors.

IDENTITY: Top reported ethnic origins are English: 18200 / Canadian: 17375 / German: 17280 / Ukrainian: 17130 / Scottish: 14985

IMMIGRATION: Philippines, India, Americas-Other, Africa-Other, Asia-Other are the top birth origins for immigrants. Philippines is the top origin for recent immigrants (2011 to 2016).

LANGUAGE: Tagalog (Pilipino, Filipino), Punjabi (Panjabi), German, Spanish, and Ukrainian are the most common non-official languages. Official Mother Tongues: 74.6% English and 2.03% French.

EDUCATION: 19.3% have no degree, diploma, or certificate. 16% have a university bachelor’s degree or above.
