Ridings to Watch: Regina–Lewvan and Saskatoon West SK

Sheri Benson is the incumbent New Democrat in Saskatoon West and her main adversary is Conservative candidate Brad Redekopp, the owner of Cherry Creek Homes. Shah Rukh is running for the Liberals; Sawn Setyo is the Green candidate.

Jigar Patel, the owner of three grocery stores, is the NDP candidate in Regina–Lewvan, which the party won by a mere 132 votes in 2015. Warren Steinley, the MLA for Regina Walsh Acres, is the Conservative hopeful. Winter Fedyk is representing the Liberals and Naomi Hunter is the Green candidate.

 
REGINA–LEWVAN IN 2015:

Erin Weir (NDP) won with 35.2% support — and a 0.3% margin of victory (132 votes) over Conservative runner-up Trent Fraser.

Regina–Lewvan was the 5th closest race out of all 338 ridings.

Voter turnout was 74.6%.

REGINA–LEWVAN IN NUMBERS (CENSUS 2016):

SIZE: 58.0 km2

POPULATION: 92,426 people in 2016: a change of 16.1% from 2011. The average age is 38.2, with 18.7% age 14 and under and 13.1% 65 and older.

CITIZENSHIP: 89.7% are Canadian citizens. 16% are immigrants. 7.6% indicated Aboriginal identity. 17.2% are visible minorities. 17.9% are 1st generation Canadians. 13.7% are 2nd generation. 68.4% are 3rd generation and older.

HOUSING: The average home value in 2016 was $374,184. Renters paid an average of $1227 per month, with 14.2% in subsidized housing. 68.4% of dwellings are single-detached houses; 14.1% are condos. 13.3% of all homes were built between 2011 and 2016.

INCOME: Median total income in 2015 was $46,549. 8.2% of people were classified as low-income (after tax) — 12.1% of children and 7.1% of seniors.

Sheri Benson (NDP) won with 39.6% support — and a 6.7% margin of victory (4,477 votes) over Conservative runner-up Randy Donauer.

Saskatoon West was the 97th closest race out of all 338 ridings.

Voter turnout was 76.9%.

SIZE: 91.4 km2

POPULATION: 83,711 people in 2016: a change of 9.1% from 2011. The average age is 36.8, with 19.9% age 14 and under and 11.5% 65 and older.

87.6% are Canadian citizens. 20.2% are immigrants. 18.5% indicated Aboriginal identity. 22.4% are visible minorities. 21.7% are 1st generation Canadians. 12.9% are 2nd generation. 65.4% are 3rd generation and older.

HOUSING: The average home value in 2016 was $313,055. Renters paid an average of $1054 per month, with 24.5% in subsidized housing. 57.0% of dwellings are single-detached houses; 11.7% are condos. 10.0% of all homes were built between 2011 and 2016.

INCOME: Median total income in 2015 was $35,387. 17.6% of people were classified as low-income (after tax) — 27.3% of children and 17.4% of seniors.
