COVID-19: Canada Responds
PM Trudeau on COVID-19 Response, Vaccine Procurement – September 25, 2020
At a news conference on Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau provides an update on the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. He announces that Canada has signed an agreement with AstraZeneca to procure up to 20 million doses of its vaccine candidate. This new agreement is in addition to a number of already-existing arrangements between the federal government and various pharmaceutical companies for the acquisition of potential vaccines. Canada will also commit approximately $220 million towards the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) Facility to procure up to 15 million vaccine doses for Canadians. The prime minister is joined by Anita Anand, the federal minister of public services and procurement, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, and Dr. Howard Njoo, the deputy chief public health officer. The federal government's update comes amid growing indications that Canada is facing a second wave of the pandemic.
