COVID-19: Canada Responds
Ontario to Adjust COVID-19 Vaccination Plan in Response to Vaccine Shortage
In a news conference at Queen’s Park, Ontario Premier Doug Ford provides an update on his government’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. He is joined by provincial Health Minister Christine Elliott, Ontario Solicitor General Sylvia Jones and retired General Rick Hillier, chair of Ontario’s COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force. The premier announces that the province will accelerate the vaccination of residents in long-term care, high-risk retirement, and First Nations elder care homes. For all other groups, the administration of the first vaccine dose is suspended. These changes are being made to respond to the cancellation of all vaccine shipments from Pfizer-BioNTech to Canada, this week. Pfizer recently announced it was temporarily reducing the number of international shipments in the coming weeks to increase production capacity at one of its European manufacturing facilities.
