CAF Concludes Recovery Operation of Helicopter Crash – June 3, 2020
At the Canadian military dockyard in Halifax, Rear-Admiral Craig Baines, commander of Maritime command component, and Colonel James Hawthorne, 12 Wing Shearwater wing commander, provide an update on the search and rescue operation involving the CAF CH-148 Cyclone helicopter that crashed off the coast of Greece on April 29, 2020, during a NATO training exercise. They announce a decision has been made to conclude the recovery operation. A combined CAF and United States Navy (USN) team has located the helicopter and recovered the remains of some of the crew members killed in the crash. The remains will be sent to Toronto for identification. Multiple pieces of the aircraft have also been found that will assist in the ongoing investigation. Six members of the Canadian Armed Forces were killed in the accident. On May 27, the CAF announced a large piece of the helicopter's fuselage had been located. The remains of some of the crew members were also found in the vicinity of the wreckage. (no interpretation)
