New Emergency Shelters for Indigenous Victims of Family Violence – June 17, 2021
At a virtual news conference, federal ministers Ahmed Hussen (responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) and Marc Miller (Indigenous services) make an announcement on housing in Canada. Minister Hussen announces the federal government will provide funding to build 12 emergency shelters across Canada for Indigenous women, children, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people escaping family violence. The government will provide $85 million over 5 years, as well as an additional $10.2 million annually thereafter. The shelters will be built in partnership with several Indigenous communities and will be Indigenous-led. (no interpretation)
