Finance - August 12, 2020 - Part 1: Ministers Carla Qualtrough (Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion) and Mary Ng (Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion) take questions from committee members about how the now-cancelled $900-million sole-sourced contract was awarded to the WE Charity Foundation. WE Charity was tasked to administer a student-volunteering program. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau have both apologized for not recusing themselves from cabinet discussions concerning the contract despite the organization’s ties to their families. The prime minister and the finance minister are also facing probes by the current t federal ethics commissioner for potential violations of the Conflict of Interest Act. Also facing questions is Benoît Robidoux, associate deputy minister for the Department of Employment and Social Development.
