2009 Right to Know Week (Part 2 of 3)
The Office of the Information Commissioner holds a series of events in recognition of Right to Know Week, Ottawa, Ont., September 28–October 2, 2009. The purpose of the week is to raise awareness about people's right to access government information while promoting freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance. This year’s theme is “Making It Right to Know: the Canadian Experience and Global Perspective.” This September 30th session features a panel discussion entitled “Democracy, the Right to Information, and the Role of Legislation.” The panellists are Amir Attaran (University of Ottawa law professor), Jim Bronskill (reporter, Canadian Press), retired col. Michel Drapeau (Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa), David Fraser (chairman of the Canadian Bar Association), Denis Kratchanov (Information Law and Privacy Section, Justice Canada), David Stratas (litigation partner, Heenan Blaikie LLP), Diane Therrien (counsel, Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada), and Paul Szabo (Liberal MP). After speaking, panellists field questions from audience members. Vincent Kazmierski (Department of Law, Carleton University) moderates.
