2009 Halifax International Security Forum (Part 3 of 8)
The Halifax International Security Forum is held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, November 20–22, 2009. This conference is the first of its kind in North America and addresses the top global security challenges facing the transatlantic community. In this second panel discussion on November 21st, entitled “Pirates, Ports, and Proliferation: Securing the Seas,” panellists discuss the international response to the resurgence of piracy in recent years. The panellists are Peter MacKay (Canadian Defence Minister), Admiral Mark Fitzgerald (commander of United States naval forces in Europe and Africa), and Eimert van Middelkoop (Dutch Defence Minister). The panel also discusses how climate change is reshaping the maritime security environment. Susan Bonner (Washington correspondent, CBC News) moderates. Discussion is then opened up to audience members.
