In Committee from the House of Commons
Procedure and House Affairs
Procedure and House Affairs (March 16, 2011) Public Safety Minister Vic Toews and Justice Minister Rob Nicholson testified during the committee’s hearings on whether the Conservative government breached Parliamentary privilege by failing to disclose all cost estimates for its corporate tax cuts, its crime bills and its F-35 fighter jet purchase. The committee could find the government in contempt of Parliament. House Speaker Peter Milliken has ruled that that there was the appearance of a breach in the government’s refusal to give MPs the full details. The ministers came to the committee with a large group of senior public servants and armed with binders that contained hundreds of pages of documents with more cost details for the crime bills. Opposition MP questioned why that information wasn’t provided when it was requested this past November.
