Conservative senator Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu spoke to reporters about the death penalty in Canada. The senator is a victims' rights advocate whose daughter was murdered in 2002. Senator Boisvenu suggested giving convicted murderers a rope in their cells and letting them decide whether or not to end their lives. The senator also commented on the Shafia case, in which a father, a mother, and their son were convicted of murdering four family members. Interim NDP leader Nycole Turmel, interim Liberal leader Bob Rae, and Liberal MP Denis Coderre reacted to Senator Boisvenu's comments. Defence Minister Peter MacKay and NDP justice critic Jack Harris reacted to a leaked NATO report on the Taliban. The report suggests that Pakistan's intelligence service is directly supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan, and that Taliban insurgents are confident that they will regain power once NATO allies leave Afghanistan in 2014.
