Senators discussed the management of agricultural waste as part of their study of research and innovation efforts in the agricultural sector. Kari Dunfield, an assistant professor in the Department of Land Resource Science at the University of Guelph, provided an overview of her research, which assesses the effects of agricultural management practices. Professor Dunfield spoke about the benefits of using agricultural waste or manure to maintain soil carbon and nutrient levels and to ensure soil sustainability. Élise Villeneuve, chief operation officer of Bio-Terre Systems Inc., discussed the sustainable environmental technology that is offered by the Canadian company. Bio-Terre Systems uses anaerobic digestion to recycle waste into sources of energy and fertilizer.
