Appearances: John Duncan, Paul Salembier, Gail Mitchell, Karl Carisse, Charles Weaselhead, Brent Scout Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan appeared before the committee to discuss Bill S-8, an act respecting the safety of drinking water on First Nation lands. The minister elaborated on the importance of the bill and spoke about collaborating with First Nations groups to establish water monitoring regulations. Senior government officials from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, the Department of Justice Canada, and Health Canada were also on hand to answer questions on technical aspects of the bill. Chief Charles Weaselhead of the Treaty 7 First Nations Chiefs Association discussed aspects of the bill he supports, as well as his association’s remaining concerns, in the second part of the meeting.
