The Week with Mark Sutcliffe
April 27, 2014
This Sunday, Mark welcomes Susan Lunn, national reporter for CBC Radio’s Parliamentary Bureau, and Andrew Cohen, author, columnist and professor at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication. Viewers are also invited to share their thoughts about the week’s political stories: SUPREME COURT ON SENATE REFORM The Supreme Court of Canada says the Senate can't be reformed or abolished without amending the constitution. Its opinion answers a series of questions the Harper government asked about such options as setting term limits for senators and electing senators. What does this decision mean for the future of the Senate and the prime minister's plans for reform? And what should the government do next? MORATORIUM ON FOREIGN WORKER PROGRAM The federal government placed a moratorium on food services using the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. This follows allegations of abuse. Should the Temporary Foreign Worker Program be overhauled or scrapped, or should the government simply crack down on abuse? And is it fair to target all restaurants because of the allegations of abuse by some? CANADA'S MIDDLE CLASS A new study contradicts the Liberal Party position that Canada's middle class has fared poorly under the Conservative government. The New York Times study places Canada's middle class as top class, compared with those in the United States and other countries. Does this study undermine the Liberal platform? Is Canada's middle class in good shape or are new policies needed to improve the fortunes of working families?
