In Committee from the House of Commons
Citizenship and Immigration - April 2, 2014
The committee continues its study on strengthening the protection of women in our immigration system, with a focus on the unique challenges that face sponsored women. On the first panel are University of Ottawa professor Denise Spitzer who discuses the gender inequality that stems from spousal sponsorship, and author Kamal Dhillon who tells her own personal story of suffering from domestic violence. On the second panel are Kripa Sekhar, executive director of the South Asian Women’s Centre, Alia Hogben, executive director of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, and Salma Saddiqui, president of the Coalition of Progressive Canadian Muslim Organizations. The witnesses speak on the issues arising from the new two-year conditionality on permanent residency. (April 2, 2014)
