Senators discuss Divisions 17 and 30 of Part 6 of the budget bill (C-31) which amends the Canada Labour Code and the Employment Insurance Act and enacts the Apprentice Loans Act. During the first part of the committee, senators discuss division 17 of part 6 of the bill with Annette Ryan, Jean-François Roussy, Laurent Quintal and John Farrell from Employment and Social Development Canada. The amendments to the Employment Insurance Act would facilitate access to sickness benefits for claimants who are in receipt of compassionate care benefits or benefits for parents of critically ill children. During the second part of the committee, Atiq Rahman and Sarah Watts-Rynard from Employment and Social Development Canada, speak about division 30 of part 6 of the budget bill. Under the Apprentice Loans Act, apprentices registered in eligible trades will be eligible for loans that will be interest-free until their training ends.
