In Committee from the House of Commons
Transport, Infrastructure and Communities - March 24, 2015
Conservative MP Joyce Bateman presents her private member's bill (C-627) to amend the Railway Safety Act during the first hour of the meeting. The proposed amendments would give additional powers to the transport minister to intervene, when required, to help better ensure the safety of Canadian citizens, their property and communities. The legislation would also empower railway safety inspectors so that they may intervene to restrict the use of unsafe works and equipment, and to forbid or restrict unsafe crossings and road crossings. Canadian National Railway executive vice-presidents Jim Vena and Sean Finn, as well as vice-president Michael Farkouh, then update the committee on recent derailments in Ontario involving CN trains. They discuss CNs safety initiatives and the efforts it has undertaken to further strengthen its safety management system. (March 24, 2015)
