Our Future: A Public Dialogue
McGill University hosts a panel discussion to analyze a manifesto entitled “Pour un Québec Lucide,” Montreal, Que., October 19, 2006. The manifesto reviews important issues facing Quebec. In this session, speakers explore the influence of globalization on Montreal. Pete Engardio (editor of Businessweek) discusses workforce shortages and Quebec’s place within a changing global economy. Michel Tougas (Towers Perrin Canada) offers suggestions for maintaining economic competition despite Montreal’s shrinking workforce. Michel Belley (rector at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi) speaks about the importance of small communities in Quebec’s overall development. Gérald Larose (visiting professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal) explains the effects of liberal globalization, which he describes as a system that helps encourage the creation of accessible and affordable global markets. Gérald Tremblay (partner at McCarthy Tétrault) speaks about his vision for Montreal, one which would welcome the opportunities presented by globalization. Christopher Manfredi (dean of the Faculty of Arts at McGill University) introduces the speakers.
