Group Seeks Supreme Court Reference on Quebec Secession Law
Keith Henderson and Stephen Scott, respectively chair and founder of the Special Committee for Canadian Unity, as well as journalist William Johnson speak on Parliament Hill to discuss their concerns with a recent Quebec court decision on the constitutionality of Bill 99. Bill 99 was enacted in 2000 by Lucien Bouchard's Parti Québécois government and asserts the province's right to determine its future and to set the rules of secession from Canada. Henderson, a former leader of the now-defunct anglophone rights Equality Party, launched a challenge of Bill 99 in 2001. Madame Justice Claude Dallaire of the Quebec Superior Court ruled in April 2018 that the bill was constitutional and does not confer any right to unilateral secession.
