Cabinet Approves Trans Mountain Expansion For Second Time
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks with reporters in Ottawa after announcing that the federal cabinet has given the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project the green light for a second time. He is joined by ministers Catherine McKenna (environment), Bill Morneau (finance), Amarjeet Sohi (natural resources), Marc Garneau (transport), and Jonathan Wilkinson (fisheries). The government is promising to invest any profits generated by the eventual sale of the pipeline into green projects that would help Canada transition away from fossil fuels to clean energy. Cabinet originally approved the expansion in 2016 but a federal court ruling overturned that decision in August 2018, citing inadequate environmental reviews and the need for further consultation with Indigenous communities. Meanwhile, in May 2018, with the future of the expansion in doubt, the federal government announced that it would purchase the project from Kinder Morgan Canada for $4.5 billion. (June 18, 2019)
