Chrystia Freeland Speaks in Mexico City on Revised New NAFTA
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland speaks with reporters at the Canadian embassy in Mexico City on updates to the new North American free trade agreement. She took part in a signing ceremony with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Mexico's Undersecretary for North America Jesús Seade prior to her news conference. U.S. Democrats have agreed to revisions in the trade deal that addressed their concerns on labour standards, environmental protections, and prescription drug prices. The renegotiated NAFTA was signed between Canada, the United States and Mexico on November 30, 2018, after 14 months of intense negotiations, but only Mexico has ratified it.
