WE Charity Affair & Reviving Rona Ambrose’s Bill – October 19, 2020
Scrums, news conferences, committees, conferences – highlights from the working day in Canadian politics: Michael Barrett, the Conservative ethics critic, Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative finance critic, and Charlie Angus, the NDP ethics critic, comment on their efforts to revive investigations into the federal government’s now-cancelled agreement with WE Charity. Pablo Rodriguez, the Government House leader, responds to the opposition’s efforts. Federal ministers David Lametti (justice) and Maryam Monsef (women and gender equality) speak with reporters on Parliament Hill about legislation (C-3) requiring federal judges to undergo training about sexual assault law. MPs are scheduled to vote on Bill C-3 at second reading later in the day. Former interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose introduced a private member’s bill in February 2017 that would have mandated such education for prospective federal judges. The Liberal government revived her bill and tabled Bill C-5 three years later on February 4, 2020. The new identical bill was reintroduced on September 25, 2020, following the prorogation of Parliament.
