Emergency Debate on Rail Blockades and Crown–Indigenous Relations
Following a request by NDP House leader Peter Julian and his Bloc Québécois counterpart Alain Therrien, MPs hold an emergency debate in the House of Commons on Canada's relationship with Indigenous peoples. The request comes amid ongoing blockades of transportation facilities that have been held across Canada in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en Nation. Blockades have brought a halt to passenger and freight rail traffic in a number of locations nationwide. At the centre of the dispute is the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs’ opposition to the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline that crosses their traditional territory in northern B.C (February 18, 2020)
