Apology From Canada for the Internment of Italian Canadians - May 27, 2021
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday issued a formal apology from Canada for the internment of Italian Canadians during World War II. 600 Italian-Canadian men were interned in camps in Canada after Italy allied with Germany and joined the war in 1940. Some 31,000 other Italian-Canadians were then declared enemies of the state and some had their businesses and homes seized. We discuss it with Independent Senator Tony Loffreda. A motion by the Bloc Québécois which demanded that all elected members of the House of Commons admit that Quebec has the right to modify the Constitution of 1867 as it intends to do with its Bill 96, a motion to prevent the holding of elections in times of pandemic, and the chances of adoption for Bill C-10… We analyze these with journalists Joël-Denis Bellavance (La Presse), Konrad Yakabuski (Le Devoir) and Althia Raj. According to a survey released this week, many African-Canadian entrepreneurs face widespread barriers, including when it comes to accessing capital, building support networks and developing skills. The study, conducted by Abacus Data, was commissioned by the African-Canadian Senate group. Of the 342 entrepreneurs surveyed, 76% said being Black made it harder to be successful as a business owner. We take stock with Independent Senator Marie-Françoise Mégie and Liberal MP Greg Fergus.
