Ukrainian president delivers virtual address to Parliament

Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy delivered a joint video address to Parliament as the Russian attack on his country continues.

In describing the current situation in Ukraine, Zelenskyy asked Canadians to imagine Ottawa or the CN Tower being bombed, or Vancouver under siege.

And he repeated his plea for a no-fly zone, asking: “How many more cruise missiles have to fall on our cities until you make this happen?”

Zelenskyy also asked Canadians to continue their effort to support Ukrainians resisting Russia's "attempt to destroy our future."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formally introduced Zelenskyy and confirmed new Canadian sanctions against 15 Russian individuals

Also providing remarks: Senate Speaker George Furey, House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota, Conservative interim leader Candice Bergen, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, and Green parliamentary leader Elizabeth May.

Zelenskyy is the third Ukrainian president to deliver a speech to Canada's Parliament, following Victor Yushchenko (2008) and Petro Poroshenko (2014). Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was the last visiting dignitary to speak in person, appearing in Ottawa in October 2018.

Zelenskyy is also scheduled to speak to the United States Congress on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian president delivered a similar message last week to the United Kingdom, asking to "please ensure that Ukrainian skies are safe."

He added: "We will not give up, and we will not lose. We will fight until the end at sea and in the air. We will continue fighting for our land, whatever the cost. We will fight in the forests, in the fields, on the shores and in the streets."
