It's another busy day as MPs sit late into the evening before rising later this week for the summer break.

Tuesday's agenda includes:

  • Third-reading votes on the online streaming bill (C-11) after the heritage committee passed several amendments last week -- part of the government's timeline to expedite the legislation. 
  • A time allocation motion from the government on the firearms bill (C-21). 
  • The start of debate on Bill C-28 -- the government's elimination of self-induced extreme intoxication as a defence for violent crimes in the wake of a Supreme Court decision striking down the existing Section 33.1 of the Criminal Code. MPs agreed unanimously to expedite all stages of the bill today, with the justice committee studying the subject more closely this autumn.

In Committee

Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Thomas Carrique and former Ottawa police chief Peter Sloly testify at the special joint committee on the Emergencies Act. 6:30pm ET / 3:30pm PT

Earlier in the day, Patrick McDonell, the sergeant-at-arms of the House of Commons, goes before the procedure committee to discuss the parliamentary precinct's security situation in downtown Ottawa. 11am ET / 8am PT

Yves Giroux, the parliamentary budget officer, visits the government operations committee for questions on his study of Canada's military spending and potential to reach NATO's 2-per-cent GDP target. 3:30pm ET / 12:30pm PT

Yukon Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn is among the witnesses at the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs on Arctic sovereignty, security, and emergency preparedness. 3:30pm ET / 12:30pm PT

Meanwhile, the Senate transport and communications committee looks at Bill C-11 with former CRTC commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein and University of Ottawa expert Michael Geist, a prominent critic of the legislation.
