COVID-19: Canada Responds
City of Toronto Update on COVID-19 and Variants – February 8, 2021
In Toronto, Mayor John Tory, Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health, and Matthew Pegg, the general manager of Toronto’s Office of Emergency Management, provide an update on the city’s response to COVID-19 (coronavirus disease). They react to the provincial government’s plan regarding easing of public health restrictions, in which Toronto could see its stay-at-home order lifted on February 22. Dr. de Villa insists that right now is not a good moment for Toronto to loosen its restrictions, mostly because of the threat caused by the propagation of COVID-19 variants. The city has confirmed its first case of the P.1 variant, which is Canada's first known case of the Brazilian variant. Toronto is also reporting its first case of the South African variant, known as B.1.351. (no interpretation)
