COVID-19: Canada Responds
Ontario Announces Schools Will Remain Closed for Rest of School Year
In a news conference at Queen’s Park, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announces that schools in the province will not reopen for in-person learning for the remainder of the academic year. Classrooms in the province have been shuttered since mid-April due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease). The premier also addresses the discovery of the remains of 215 children at a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia. He is joined by Education Minister Stephen Lecce and Health Minister Christine Elliott. The provincial government had sought input from medical experts and educators while it considered the reopening of schools. The announcement comes as the provincewide stay-at-home order expires. Public-health restrictions remain in place. (June 2, 2021) (no interpretation)
