COVID-19: Canada Responds
Federal COVID-19 Update: NACI Gives Green Light on Vaccine Mixing – June 1, 2021
In a virtual news conference, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, and Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer provide an update on COVID-19 and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization's (NACI) guidance for the interchangeability of vaccines. NACI says that individuals who received the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine for their first dose can get the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine for their second dose. If the first dose was Pfizer or Moderna, it is strongly recommended that the same mRNA vaccine be used for the second dose if it is readily available. The federal vaccine advisory panel revised its guidelines following early studies from Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain that show mixing doses is safe and effective.
