COVID-19: Canada Responds
Federal Govt. Outline New Rules for Fully Vaccinated Travellers – June 21, 2021
At a virtual press conference, federal ministers Patty Hajdu (health), Bill Blair (public safety), Omar Alghabra (transport), Dominic LeBlanc (intergovernmental affairs) and Marco Mendicino (immigration) provide an update on phase one of the government's plan to ease border measures that are in place to slow the spread of COVID-19 in Canada. Minister Hajdu announces that starting July 5 at 11:59 p.m., fully vaccinated travellers who are permitted to enter the country will not be required to quarantine or take a COVID-19 test on day eight of their arrival. Travellers arriving by air will also not have to stay at a government-authorized quarantine hotel. Vaccinated travellers must still meet all other mandatory requirements, including pre- and on-arrival testing. Proof of vaccination will be required, as well as having a suitable quarantine plan in case border officials determine that not all conditions have been met to be exempt from quarantine. Minister Alghabra also announces that Canada is extending its ban of direct commercial and private passenger flights from India by another 30 days to July 21, but flights from Pakistan will be allowed to resume. The flight ban extension comes amid growing concerns over the highly transmissible delta COVID-19 variant first discovered in India. The flight ban first went into effect on April 22. Minister Mendicino confirms that individuals with a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR), in particular those approved after March 18, 2020, will now be eligible to travel to Canada. On June 18, the federal government announced that the Canada-U.S. border closure on non-essential travel was extended and that restrictions will remain in place until at least July 21.
