Chief Justice Richard Wagner Provides Update on Work of Supreme Court
Chief Justice of Canada Richard Wagner holds a news conference in Ottawa to provide an update on the work of the Supreme Court. At his first news conference last year as chief justice, Wagner told reporters that he and his fellow judges wanted to make the country's top court more accessible to Canadians. The court has been posting plain language case summaries on its social media accounts, and also released its first annual report about its activities. It will hold its first hearings outside of Ottawa this September, when it will travel to Winnipeg to hear two appeals and meet with Manitobans. Wagner was appointed chief justice on December 18, 2017, after serving on the top court for five years. He succeeded Beverley McLachlin, who retired after 17 years in the role. (June 20, 2019)
