Perry Bellegarde on Police, Racism, and Canada’s First Nations – June 14, 2020
Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde speaks with CPAC’s Andrew Thomson about the relationship between police and Canada’s First Nations communities in light of a number of recent incidents in which Indigenous Canadians have been killed or injured at the hands of law enforcement officers. Most recently, 48-year-old Rodney Levi was shot and killed in a June 12, 2020, encounter with New Brunswick RCMP near Metepenagiag Mi'kmaq Nation. That incident came hours after RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki acknowledged the existence of systemic racism within the police force.
