NDP MP Charlie Angus Discusses Cuts at Laurentian University
Charlie Angus, the NDP MP who represents the northern Ontario riding of Timmins—James Bay, discusses the cuts to Laurentian University's programs and faculty positions. The Sudbury, Ontario, university is terminating 58 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs as well as roughly 110 staff positions as it restructures amid insolvency. Of those programs, 34 are English-language programs and 24 are French-language. The university announced on February 1, 2021, that it had started a court proceeding under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). Laurentian is the only public institution with a mandate to support francophone, Indigenous and working-class anglophone communities and provide them with an opportunity to access post-secondary education. Angus also shares his personal link with Laurentian, as his father is a graduate of the university. The son of a miner who had to leave school at 16 to get a job, Angus' father was able to attend Laurentian when he was an adult and later became a professor of economics. Angus says he intends to table legislation so that ensure the CCAA cannot be used against a public institution. (April 13, 2021) (no interpretation)
